Tanzania’s President, Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed January Makamba, a former Deputy Environment Minister, who was disgraced out of office in 2019, as the new Energy Minister.

Makamba got sacked from office for criticising the former energy minister, her predecessor and forced to apologize to late president, John Magufuli.

Magufuli, known for his hard rule in Tanzania at the time, accused Makamba of criticising him during telephone conversations with other members of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party and threatened to expel the minister unless he apologised.

The ex-president made no secret of the fact that he eavesdropped on the telephone conversations of members of his government.

But in a reshuffle of cabinet, Hassan, who has broken from some of her predecessor’s policies, announced overnight Monday that the 47-year-old is back to government and she has put him in charge of the strategically important ministry of energy.

The ministry of energy is currently overseeing the construction of a controversial hydropower dam project in the Selous Game Reserve and is strategically vital to Tanzania, which has significant natural gas reserves.
