A former governor of Abia state, Peter Obi has averred that Nigeria is not working as it should because incompetent people were recruited to occupy several government offices on basis of sentiment.
He added the competence is not something the country can boast of at this critical moment, adding that this way of operating has to stop.
“The reason Nigeria is not working today is that people have been recruited based on sentiments,” said the former chairman of the Nigeria Security Commission.
He said, “if we have to recruit you to be local government chairman, governor, vice president, president, and minister, it must be based on capacity and competence, which are viable not what we are doing now and the country is collapsing”.
The ex-governor, who was also the running mate of former of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2019 general elections, Atiku Abubakar, made the remarks on Wednesday in the company of the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike when commissioning the Constructed Internal Road Phase 2 in Isiokpo, Ikwere Local Government Area of the state.
He further noted that accountability in government is a very critical yardstick to determining good governance and to build the trust of the people.
The PDP stalwart also lauded the governor for what he is doing for the people of Rivers State and urged all persons saddled with the responsibility of governance as well as the welfare of the people to give their best.
