President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday refused to address a national issue bordering on his government’s decision to suspend Twitter operations in the country.
The President, who spoke on national TV in his first-ever media interview in the last 5 years, laughed off the issue when asked what he has to say concerning the recent development with Twitter.
Buhari responded; “Twitter? “That, I will keep to myself” and laughed, having the interviewers follow suit.
The interview, which was pre-recorded video, took place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday but was aired on Arise Television Thursday morning.
Recall that last Friday, the federal government authorized concerned bodies to block Nigerians’ access to Twitter and suspended operations of the micro-blogging site indefinitely.
The pronouncement followed days after Twitter deleted a tweet by the President. The tweet was considered capable of inciting violence, a situation that violates the safety rules of the platform.
Among other issues, the President talked about insecurity, unemployment, poverty, debt profile of the country, ongoing national projects during the interview.
However, Nigerians have taken exception to certain aspects of the entire interview particularly, Buhari’s reply to Twitter ban.
One tweep,@Tunnykvng said; “Arise TV should have added a subtitle to this Buhari interview. Pls what is “Hahaha” in English?? Cos I don’t want to believe that the President is laughing over serious matters.
@VctorIsrael also said; “Arise TV organised a Prerecorded Comedy show and invited our favourite stand up comedian President Buhari to come crack jokes to his fans. AY live got nothing on Arise TV.”
@MrOdanz on his par wrote; “Buhari just said on Arise TV that the reason he doesn’t talk about what he is doing to tackle insecurity in the country is because he wants to catch criminals unawares. He doesn’t want bandits, kidnappers and co to know what is coming for them. I assuuuuure you.”
@Chrusblin brought a new dimension to the discussion as he wondered why Buhari chose to have the interview with Arise TV.
He said; “Arise TV is one TV that has seem to be uncompromised, they reported the #EndSARS protests live even against the directive of the nbc and has been broadcasting any and everything. Why did the FG choose them for first ever interview the president would be granting in 5 years?”
