The official notification for the November 6, Anambra governorship election has been published in all offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across the state, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman announced on Wednesday.
Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi in his statement in Abuja said the activities for party’s primaries and collection of nomination forms from INEC Headquarters for the election will begin Thursday, June 10.
He recalled that on Jan 19, the commission published the timetable and schedule of activities for the state election, outlining 14 activities.
“In continuation of preparations for the election, the commission has today, Wednesday, June 9, implemented the first activity on the timetable by publishing the official notice for the election in our offices in Anambra State.
“Tomorrow, Thursday, June 10, the next two activities will kick off namely: the commencement of primaries by political parties to democratically nominate their candidates for the election as well as the collection of nomination forms from INEC Headquarters,” Oyekanmi said.
The commission spokesman further appealed to political parties to conduct credible primaries in compliance with the law and INEC regulations and guidelines.
This announcement comes following INEC’s resolve to conduct the election despite recent attacks on its offices across the South-East— a situation which prompted worries of the feasibility of a poll amid insecurity.
INEC earlier in January announced that the election for a new governor will hold in November, in accordance with the Electoral Act to hold polls no earlier than 150 days or less than 30 days to the end of the tenure f the sitting governor.
Governor Willie Obiano will be ending his 8-year tenure in March 2022.
