The Senate has ordered its Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission to screen the Personal Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media, Lauretta Onochie and five others for confirmation as commissioners of the electoral body.

The five others include Prof. Muhammad Kallah (Katsina); Prof. Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti); Saidu Ahmad (Jigawa); Prof Sani Adam (North- Central); and Dr Baba Bila (North-East).

The President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan gave the order during the plenary on Wednesday, eight months since the list of nominees were forwarded from the Executive President to the chamber.

At the time the names were submitted to the Senate, members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the chamber had opposed Onochie’s nomination, in particular, arguing that her choice was not in order, being that she is a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a spokesperson of the President.

The Senate INEC panel, which has Senator Kabiru Gaya as Chairman, has been given four weeks to conclude the screening and report back to the assembly.
