A special team of police personnel has arrived in Benue State to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attempted attack on Governor Samuel Ortom.
Gunmen recently attacked the governor on his Maiduguri farm on March 20, 2021 but his security aides were able to repel the attackers.
Consequently, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu created a special team including operatives from the Technical Intelligence Unit (TIU) of the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) and other experienced crack detectives with specialized competencies.
A statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Frank Mba in Abuja on Sunday disclosed that DCP Abba Kyari led the special team.
Part of the statement read, “The team is expected to take over and consolidate all on-going investigations into the incident. It is expected to investigate all angles of the reported attack to ensure that all persons empirically linked to the incident are apprehended and brought to book.”
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has urged the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services to track a group, Fulani Nationality Movement that claimed responsibility for the attack on Ortom.
Lawmakers from Benue State moved a motion during plenary last Tuesday to demand a full-scale investigation of the incident.
Part of the adopted motion read, “The House call on the Department of State Services and Nigeria Police to investigate claims of responsibility on the attack of Governor Samuel Ortom, as well as other threats and statements allegedly attributed to one Umar Amir Shehu and the Fulani National Movement (FUNAM).”
