Abiodun was born into a royal family in Iperu, Remo in Ikenne Local Government on a conspicuous day, May 29 1960. Both his parents, Dr. Emmanuel Abiodun and Mrs. Victoria Abiodun are teachers.

He attended at Christ’s School Ado Ekiti in 1972, St. Joseph’s College, Ondo in 1977, and later Ondo High School, in 1978.

Finishing his secondary school education, Abiodun went to the prestigious University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife, Osun State, to study Civil Engineering but did not graduate from there. He later travelled out of the country to study at the Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, Georgia, United States where he graduated with a BBA in Accounting in 1986.

He is married to Bamidele Abiodun with whom he has five children. He is a staunch Christian and member of the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministry. Despite the controversies that trailed his election, Abiodun insisted that God brought him to power.

Abiodun got his first employment with Glock Inc. USA as Cost Accountant in 1989 up until 1991 when he returned to Nigeria. On getting back, he continued with his professional field in the private sector for a couple of years, working in areas of boardroom activities, corporate governance and finance.

He was Chairman/CEO of Crestar Hydrocarbons Limited, OMS-Heyden Exploration and Production Limited, Heyden Petroleum Limited, Alarmnet and Innovative Ventures Limited, and First Power Limited.

Leaving the private sector, Abiodun has, for a considerable number of years, been in the public space, serving in various Presidential Committees. In 2001, he became a member of Presidential Think Tank set up by President Olusegun Obasanjo; In 2009, Chairman, Oil and Gas Committee of Ogun State; and also, Chairman of Depot and Petroleum Product Marketers Association (DAPPMA) from 2012 till 2019.

President Muhammadu Buhari later picked him to serve as Chairman of Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in 2018 during which he led a number of reform initiatives that standardized and improved the business registration process in the country, leading to a higher ease-of-doing-business ranking for the country.

His first political party was the defunct United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP), where he was elected as the youngest senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1998. However, his victory was shortlived as the country moved into civil rule in 1999.

In the new dispensation, Abiodun joined People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State to become of its pioneer members. He contested the 2002 governorship primaries of the party but lost. Later, he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2015 general elections to contest the Ogun East senatorial seat but got defeated by his PDP opponent.

However, he made a comeback in 2019 when he contested the tense governorship elections in Ogun state and won, under the platform of the APC.

Abiodun was sworn in as Governor of Ogun State on 29 May 2019, yet again a conspicuous day.

Reportedly, Abiodun founded Heyden Petroleum Ltd (HPL), an Oil and Gas company in Nigeria. Dapo lives a luxurious life which is expected of any oil tycoon. He has an enviable gigantic architectural structure in his hometown, Iperu, Remo.

He is one of the richest governors of this present crop with an estimated net worth of $314 Million.

Abiodun has been said to have received plenty of accolades for meritorious service.

In 2014, he was honoured by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan with the prestigious National Award of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (MFR).

In 2018, he was awarded a Doctor of Science in Business Development and Administration (Honoris Causa) Degree by the Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State; and Doctor of Finance (Honoris Causa) Degree by the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti for impacts and contributions to the development of the nation and community.

A major controversy for Abiodun is his educational background. This made debate in the run-up to the 2019 governorship election. The accusation was that Abiodun never went to OAU but clarifying the matter in an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on Channels Television in December 2018, Abiodun claimed “To Have Never Gotten A Degree From Obafemi Awolowo University”

In 2020, Abiodun was appointed the winner of the Big Brother Season 5 Reality Tv Show, Olamilekan Agbelesebioba aka Laycon as Ogun State Youth Ambassador, which came with N5 million in gift and bungalow. While some praised him, many expressed displeasure, questioning the rationale beyond the appointment considering he did nothing of merit to have deserved the position and many other youths that the money could have been used to alleviate their sufferings.
