The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the release of a former governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, following his arrest on Sunday.
According to the spokesperson for the state police command, Orlando Ikeokwu, the former governor was “invited for questioning” over the unsealing the Spring Palm Hotel linked to his wife, Nkechi.
Reports have it that the police arrested Okorocha after he allegedly unsealed the hotel which was closed down by the commissioner for lands and physical planning on behalf of the Imo State Government.
The commissioner explained that the hotel was allegedly built with taxpayers’ money instead of his wife’s funds.
A viral picture on WhatsApp showed the former governor sitting along a corridor of a police station.
Providing updates on the development, the PPRO said, “He was released later at night. If anybody is found culpable, definitely, he will be charged to court. If investigation proves that he (Okorocha) has committed an offence, he will be charged to court.”
However, Okorocha alleged that Governor Hope Uzodimma sealed the hotel as part of his witch-hunting strategy.
Mr Okorocha’s aide, Ebere Nzewuji, debunked claims that the serving Senator forcefully unsealed his wife’s hotel.
He added, “When he arrived at the premises, they were confronted with thugs who had guns and machetes, and they were attacking him and his entourage.”
